Despite our nagging, members of many stunt, BMX, and mountain racing teams and other professional riders, bike messengers and athletes may appear, ride or race without helmets. We don't think it's a good idea, but they are experienced, professional cyclists and they know the risks. They are also adults, so we respect their right to choose. Despite the intransigence of these riders, we strongly advocate the use of helmets on every ride. Wearing a helmet is perhaps your single best defense against a major medical catastrophe while riding, so buckle up!

Warning: Reflectors are not a substitute for proper lights. It is your responsibility to equip your bicycle with all state and locally mandated lights. Riding at dawn, at dusk, at night or at other times of poor visibility without a bicycle lighting system which meets local and state laws and without reflectors is dangerous and may result in serious injury or death.

Warning: If you ride your bike before dawn or after dusk, your bicycle must be equipped with lights so that you can see the road and avoid road hazards, and so that others can see you. Traffic laws treat bicycles like any other vehicle. That means you must have a white front and a red rear light operating if you are riding after dusk. Your bike dealer can recommend a battery or generator powered lighting system appropriate to your needs.

Warning: The two previous warnings urge you to use lights. GT also strongly urges you to use a flashing light or strobe. Most of us at GT who ride at night or in conditions of lower visibility use flashers. They can save your life.

Warning: All GT bicycles are shipped with an Owner's Manual. It is important to your safety and to maximize the performance of your GT that you read the Owner’s Manual and any other documents that were shipped with your bicycle. If you suspect that you do not have all of the instructional materials that should accompany your bike, double check with your retailer and call GT at 1-800-THEBIKE.

GT has long urged the use of helmets. We have recently become aware of neck braces, designed for mountain biking and motocross riding, fitted between the rider and helmet, that can decrease the risk of paralysis, spinal cord and neck injuries. As the manufacturer clearly states, these braces cannot prevent all injuries. We urge riders, particularly riders into challenging and risky riding, to investigate and consider neck braces. One of these might save your life or keep you out of a wheelchair.

If you're going hard-core, be smart about it, eh? Always wear a full face helmet, state of the art neck brace, full body armor including spine protector, arm and leg pads, full-finger gloves and protective clothing. Choose a bike that's right for you, your riding and terrain, and check it often for signs of fatigue or other trouble. (Your GT dealer can help you on both fronts.) Read the GT Owner's Manual. And most importantly, ride within your ability, know your limitations. Practice. Stay in control, and carefully, gradually expand your limits - but ride within them.

Consider professional instruction. Just like for risky sports like automobile and motorcycle racing there is instruction available.

It is important for your safety that your GT bicycle is regularly inspected and serviced. Your authorized GT retailer must be involved in inspection and service.

Problems of pilot error aside, hard-core riding also beats the heck out of your equipment.

Although we build and test our bikes to make them tough, there's no way that we can guarantee they'll survive your umpteenth six-foot drop. For starters, there is no industry "jumping" standard. The many circumstances of takeoff, landing, speed, rider technique, etc. are unique. The judgment, lack of judgment or insanity of a rider that may ride a GT bicycle cannot be completely predicted, so it's flat-out impossible to predict how anyone's equipment is going to hold up.

Let's get another thing straight. Buying a Freeride bike, or any design bike, does not make you any better. Do not confuse the built-in capabilities of equipment with your own capabilities, which must be learned.

Keeping your bike and all its components in good working order is critical, and it's up to you to maintain and inspect it. Even so, your sweet rig isn't going to last forever. Nothing does, particularly bikes and parts that are built to minimize weight and then subjected to abuse.

GT frames carry a lifetime warranty, but that's to cover issues with workmanship and/or materials. See the GT Warranty. It doesn't mean that they're going to last forever. They're not. It certainly doesn't mean that the bicycle will last forever or can in any way protect you from injury.

Freeriding, freestyle, hucking, dirt jumping, pump tracks, jumping doubles, ramp riding, pool sessions, street, mountaincross, downhill, slalom, stunt riding. It seems that everywhere you look, from the X-Games to the Red Bull Rampage, on 26", 29" or 20" wheels, riders are grabbing big air and sticking sick drops. And it sure looks fun.
But what the videos and bike magazines and ads don't always tell you is that extreme riding takes an amazing amount of skill. Some of the riders you see are well-paid pros who have gradually built up their skills through endless hours of practice, and who have also had their share of stitches, concussions and busted bones (and bikes). Others are daredevils who have chosen to accept or ignore the risks. Would you allow a lawyer to say that you are so weak in the head, and have such poor judgment that you copy those you see in the media without thought of the serious risks?
The stakes are high if you screw up. Realize too late that you aren't up to the challenge, and you run the risk of major injury or even - say it with me - death, paralysis. In short, extreme riding carries a high degree of fundamental risk, and you bear the ultimate responsibility for how you ride and what you attempt to pull off.
Do you want to avoid these significant risks? Then do not ride this way.

The specific warranty covering your GT bicycle is governed by the law of the state or country in which it was purchased, and applies only to bicycles purchased from Authorized GT Retailers.

FRAMES (frame, fork structure, swing arm):

GT frames 2015 model year and newer (except frames for Freeride, and Dirt Jumping bikes, see below) are warranted by GT Bicycle Corporation, 1 Cannondale Way, Wilton, CT 06897 against manufacturing defects in materials and/or workmanship for the lifetime of the original owner.

GT frames for Gravity, Freeride & Dirt Jumping bikes (such as Fury, Sanction, Distortion. Ruckus, and La Bomba) are warranted against manufacturing defects in materials and/or workmanship for a period of three (3) years from the date of original retail purchase. The Gravity / Freeride / Dirt Jumping warranty does not cover any bike purchased and used for rental purchase. The Gravity / Freeride / Dirt Jumping warranty differs from the warranty as stated in the GT Owner's Manual only in its term. All other conditions apply.

COMPONENTS:

All other components, frame fixtures and finishes (paint and decals) are warranted against manufacturing defects in materials and/or workmanship for a period of one year from the date of original retail purchase. Suspension forks (other than those made by GT) are not covered by this limited warranty, but are separately covered by the stated warranty of their manufacturer.

TERMS OF LIMITED WARRANTY:

• This limited warranty is not meant to suggest or imply that the bicycle cannot be broken or will last forever. It does mean that the bicycle is covered subject to the terms of the limited warranty.
• This limited warranty applies only to the original owner of a GT bicycle and is not transferable to subsequent owners.
• For any warranty claim to be considered, the bicycle must be brought in to an Authorized GT Bicycle Retailer on the same continent on which the bicycle was purchased. The bicycle must be in assembled condition and accompanied by the original, dated sales receipt for the bicycle. (Be sure to keep your receipt in a safe place.)
• This limited warranty is void if the bicycle is subjected to abuse, neglect, improper repair, improper maintenance, alteration, modification, an accident or other abnormal, excessive, or improper use.
• This limited warranty applies only to bicycles purchased in fully assembled and adjusted condition from Authorized GT Retailers or other outlets specifically authorized by GT to distribute GT bicycles.
• Damage resulting from normal wear and tear, including the results of fatigue, is not covered. Fatigue damage is a symptom of the frame being worn out through normal use. It is one kind of normal wear and tear, and it is the owner's responsibility to inspect his/her bicycle.
• Damage resulting from improper assembly or maintenance, or from installation of parts and accessories not compatible with the GT bicycle, is not covered.All labor charges for warranty service are the responsibility of the bicycle's owner.
• During the duration of this limited warranty, GT will either repair any defective frame or component, or, at our option, replace any defective frame or component with the same or most nearly comparable model or component then available.

THIS IS THE EXCLUSIVE REMEDY UNDER THIS WARRANTY. ANY AND ALL OTHER REMEDIES AND DAMAGES THAT MAY OTHERWISE BE APPLICABLE ARE EXCLUDED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES.

THIS IS THE ONLY WARRANTY MADE BY GT ON ITS FRAMES AND COMPONENTS, AND THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES WHICH EXTEND BEYOND THE DESCRIPTION HEREIN. ANY WARRANTIES THAT MAY OTHERWISE BE IMPLIED BY LAW INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE EXCLUDED.

This Limited Warranty gives the consumer specific legal rights. The consumer may also have other legal rights which vary from state to state or country to country. Some states and countries do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages or warranties, so the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. If it is determined by a court of competent jurisdiction that a certain provision of this limited warranty does not apply, such determination shall not affect any other provision of this limited warranty and all other provisions shall remain in effect.

Unfortunately, accidents happen. There are a wide variety of situations a rider can find themselves in that can result in non-warranty damage to their bike. Here at GT, we hope to get you back up and riding as fast as possible. In situations where a bike is compromised, that is not the result of a manufacturing defect, we offer a few different options for Crash Replacement. In order to qualify for Crash Replacement, the customer must:

• Be the original owner of the bike
• Include the original proof of purchase
• Have the frame evaluated by their local GT retailer
• Once it is determined that the bike must be replaced. The retailer will contact GT for more details regarding pricing and availability.

Modern GT bikes feature the bicycle's serial number on the underside of the frame and will be accompanied by a bar code.

Vintage and older GT bikes may have serial numbers placed on other areas of the frame such as the seat stays next to the rear dropouts or the head badge .

GT bicycles are intended to be sold only in a completely assembled and adjusted condition, by authorized GT Retailers at authorized locations. We have generally prohibited the sale of GT bicycles through the Internet or mail order. If you have any suspicion or concerns regarding the authenticity of a seller, please call us at 1-800-BIKE-USA.
We do this for your safety. Taking the professional retailer out of the process increases the chance of assembly errors that could lead to an accident on injury. Proper assembly and adjustment are key aspects of maximizing safety, and GT requires the retailers to completely assemble and adjust every GT bicycle prior to its sale. This is particularly important with the unique and innovative features specific to many GT bicycles. We also require that the retailer orient you to the particular bicycle, and to review safety equipment. Please note that your initial 30 day service visit is also very important. Beyond safety, your fit, comfort and satisfaction with the performance of the bicycle are best assured by hands-on professional service.
Finally, as authorized GT retailers are not permitted to sell our bikes via the Internet or mail order, those bikes are offered through these channels are often second hand, or compromised in some way. Be aware that internet fraud happens. We have seen very professional looking websites with illegally obtained images of our bikes that are a complete fake. We have talked to people who have been tricked into thinking they were dealing with a legitimate company and have lost their money. Please don't let this happen to you.
In addition to the risks described above, with one exception, purchasing a GT bicycle via the internet voids all product warranties. Save yourself a headache and support your local authorized GT bicycle retailer.

We offer limited, but reasonable warranty coverage on “Normal Wear” parts that are defective from factory. In other words, anything that fails or breaks as the result of a manufacturer's defect. Please refer to your owner’s manual for the complete terms of warranty.

NOW, LET’S DEFINE REASONABLE:

Bicycles are sometimes subjected to considerably more stress than they were designed for. In some cases, they're ridden in ways that push the envelope of their capabilities, and or the riders for that matter. As with all bicycling disciplines, an element of discretion is an absolute must. Those failing to exercise good discretion commit to the risks associated in failing to do so -- it’s really that simple!

A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES WOULD BE:

You decide to take that corner a little too fast and dump the bike resulting in cosmetic damage. Well… You can’t ‘reasonably’ expect us to cover that under warranty since it had nothing to do with the manufacturing process.

You decide to break out the video cameras to capture the jump a lifetime, but “taco” your wheel in doing so. Again, you can’t ‘reasonably’ expect to compensate for that. You took a chance and got unlucky…

In an attempt to be super cool, you try to land a Flair one too many times and you’ve toasted the fork. You don’t expect us to compensate you for that, do you?
Suffice it to say, if you’re going to torture “any” machine, things are going to break prematurely. Therefore, you should be as equally as enthusiastic about ‘fixing stuff’ as you were breaking it!

SO HERE’S WHAT THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY WILL NOT COVER:

Manufacturer's limited warranty does not cover accidents, impact, abuse, misuse, neglect, ordinary wear & tear, anything you break accidentally or deliberately, stunting, jumping, improper assembly, improper maintenance, theft, or ride with more than one person.

BUT HOW DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ABUSE AND A DEFECT

Because we’re smart, that’s how! But seriously though, we’ve been in bicycle industry for a very long time. When you invest this many hours into design, repairs, and modifications, it becomes easier to recognize the difference between a defective part, and a machine that’s had the living daylights beaten out of it.

THINKING OF MODIFYING ANYTHING?

Any modifications made to your bicycle will void the warranty. Can you imagine trying to warranty bikes that people have modified? Please don’t, or if you must, do so when the warranty runs out.
